The hour that counts

Two hours on the road before sunrise. One turn that comes out different. One morning worth it. · 2 min

I leave the house before it gets light.

Two hours on the road, sometimes more. Coffee in the thermos, radio low. Still dark outside.

Lifts open at nine.

The first student is usually there before me. Waiting with their gear a little awkwardly, looking around. They don't yet know what awaits them.

I do.

Not what will happen in the lesson. No one knows that before it starts. I only know where to start looking.

How they stand. How they wear the boots. Whether they move comfortably or something is already pressing on them before they even step on the snow.

For the first few minutes I don't teach.

I observe.

Between lessons I sit in the lodge. Coffee, a little food, company with the others. We talk about the slope, the weather, a student who left an impression the day before. We laugh.

Some days, if I have time, I take a run for myself.

I don't say this to many. It sounds like a luxury. But it's necessary. To remember why I'm here, beyond the lessons.

There's a moment you don't always see coming.

Someone who was struggling, tight, where every turn was a fight — suddenly something shifts. The body softens. The movement becomes more natural. One turn comes out different from the others.

They don't always notice right away.

I notice.

I say nothing in that moment. I let it continue. If I make it a thing, it breaks.

Later, at the end of the lesson, they might say "I thought I wasn't going to make it." Or they might say nothing and leave smiling.

Both are the same to me.

The hour that counts isn't always the most impressive one.

Sometimes it's just that one turn. The one student something opened up in today.

That's why I leave before sunrise.

Before you go up

When it's worth going up, you'll know first.

Done. Have a good season until then.
